Book Review Of “The Night Olivia Fell” By Christina McDonald @GalleryBooks @Christinamac79

In the vein of Big Little Lies and Reconstructing Amelia comes an emotionally charged domestic suspense novel about a mother unraveling the truth behind how her daughter became brain dead. And pregnant.

A search for the truth. A lifetime of lies.

In the small hours of the morning, Abi Knight is startled awake by the phone call no mother ever wants to get: her teenage daughter Olivia has fallen off a bridge. Not only is Olivia brain dead, she’s pregnant and must remain on life support to keep her baby alive. And then Abi sees the angry bruises circling Olivia’s wrists.

When the police unexpectedly rule Olivia’s fall an accident, Abi decides to find out what really happened that night. Heartbroken and grieving, she unravels the threads of her daughter’s life. Was Olivia’s fall an accident? Or something far more sinister?

Christina McDonald weaves a suspenseful and heart wrenching tale of hidden relationships, devastating lies, and the power of a mother’s love. With flashbacks of Olivia’s own resolve to uncover family secrets, this taut and emotional novel asks: how well do you know your children? And how well do they know you?

Thank you Gallery Books for gifting me a copy of this book, in exchange of an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I rate this book a five out of five stars.

I absolutely loved this book, I devoured it within 24 hours, and all day Yesterday, I picked it up every spare second that I had. This book is incredible. Everything about it.

I think that McDonald did an amazing job at capturing the grief, guilt, and heartbreak that the mom (Abi) was feeling) and I loved the alternating chapters where you got to see what Olivia was going through. Having Abi’s chapters in the present, and trying to find out what happened to her daughter, and than having Olivia’s chapters in the past, and leading up to her fall was genius. You go to see both sides of the story. As a mom myself, this story is something of a nightmare for me.

I also love that McDonald makes you mistrust, and suspect everyone, at one point or another in the book, I thought every character was guilty. Another thing, this book isn’t about one lie, it’s about multiple lies, add them all up together, and it makes for a heart wrenching read. I haven’t read a book in a good while that was as masterfully crafted as this one. I already want to reread it, and I want all of you to read it too!

I love a good book that can show you how far a Mothers love can go, how a Daughter can finally understand why the Mother is the way she is, and even though a book can be so full of heartbreak, it can still end on a beautiful note. This book was full of such agony, and heartbreak, it honestly just blew my mind, no joke.
