Book Review Of “Gus’ Fortunate Misfortune” By Susan Pepka @SmithPublicity

In her upcoming release, Gus’ Fortunate Misfortune [2019], teacher, business owner, mother and grandmother, Susan Pepka takes young readers on an exciting journey as they follow an ordinary mouse named Gus on a quest to find a way to turn his Very Bad Day into a Hopeful New Beginning.

Following a series of unfortunate events, Gus finds himself trapped, separated from his family, and transported far from home. Alone and frightened, the young mouse must confront his deepest fears. Using his wits, Gus solves problems and makes discoveries. Adapting to his new surroundings, Gus receives help from an unexpected friend, as each trial brings a new lesson. But will Gus ultimately succeed? Will he find what he’s truly looking for?

Gus’ Fortunate Misfortune also offers a child-friendly introduction to Buddhist teachings, and how they emphasize compassion, patience, kindness, and consideration for others.

Both charming and inspirational, Gus’s Fortunate Misfortune addresses:

  • The ways in which we face challenging circumstances can define us
  • How to best show empathy for others facing difficult situations
  • Everyone sees the world through a different perspective, and how to see a situation through the eyes of another
  • The effects of bullying on a child’s confidence, and how to restore self-worth by conquering adversity
  • The ways in which generosity of spirit has a unifying effect
  • Everyone faces fear from time-to-time – how we react can either hurt or heal
  • The importance of community in our lives
  • Appreciating those different from you
  • Finding happiness through Buddhism in a sweet and playful manner
  • And much more!

Thank you Smith Publicity for gifting us a copy of this book, in exchange of an honest review. All opinions are our own.

So, this review is going to be harder to write, I thought this was a good book, and I liked the meaning of it. However, it was a bit too long for my boys, and it didn’t hold their attention like I had hoped it would. We were only able to read a few pages a night. Now, that’s not saying it’s the books fault, I think it was just a subject matter/story that was too mature for them. They really liked the illustrations though. Gus was very cute! I think this will be a great book for older children though, so I do hope it makes into the hands of the perfect readers.
